about

This is the oldest song in the collection. I wrote it as a plea to a friend to “lighten up” and enjoy some life. I don’t think he ever knew that I wrote it to him, so if you’re reading this it might be about you. The descending harmonic structure in the middle eight reminded me of John Lennon. With that and the line “Out of my tree” I decided to add Mellotron flutes to pay homage to Strawberry Fields Forever.

lyrics

Hey, hey, hey won’t you stay with me now?
We could watch the sunrise.
It’ll be OK
Even if the sun should turn to clouds
And rain down in our eyes

I can tell by that wrinkled brow
That you think I...think I’ve lost my head
And I’m out of my tree
You can hold… your breath
Until you turn red
But stranger than the change I’ve seen
Is why it is you won’t talk to me

What do you want from me?
I’m the last man on Earth
What do you want from me?
I’m the last man on Earth
Who could set you free…

Hey, hey, hey…so you say I’ve completely lost my mind
But you’ve turned gray, don’t let your life slip away
And turn old before your time

If I were Edison, or Bell, or even Sherlock Holmes
Would you pass it off
Being out of my tree?
If I were Hemingway, or Mills, or Poe,
Or Woolf, or Pig, or Ridinghood
Being out of my tree
You can hold…a thorn until you bleed
But stranger than the change I’ve seen
Is why it is you won’t talk to me

What do you want from me?
I’m the last man on Earth
What do you want from me?
I’m the last man on Earth
Who could set you free…

Hey, hey, hey…what are you saying to me now
Are you going away or is that old rainstorm coming down?
Coming down on you

If I were Edison, or Bell,
Or even Sherlock Holmes
Would you pass it off
Being out of my tree?
You can hold…a thorn
Until you bleed
But stranger than the change I’ve seen
Is why it is you won’t talk to me

What do you want from me?
I’m the last man on Earth
What do you want from me?
I’m the last man on Earth
Who could set you free…
